Understanding Hypnotherapy as “Complementary Treatment”
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural way of bypassing your conscious mind and reaching directly to the subconscious mind. In a state of deep relaxation, your mind accepts suggestions as they are and releases beliefs that hold you back. Hypnotherapy is effective because it works directly with the part of the mind that keeps the problem in place – the unconscious. We use guided visualization another form of hypnosis to help You, the client, make the changes they want in their lives quickly, easily and effectively.
Simply put – Hypnotherapy is the combination of hypnosis and therapy.
Through hypnotherapy, the therapist in this case, Liza, guides you to gently yet directly delve into your subconscious mind and to edit or change a behavior that may be negatively impacting your ability to live life to the fullest. Remember we are not doing any voodoo work here.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” ~Albert Einstein
People visit hypnotherapists for all sorts of reasons. Most commonly, they come to stop smoking, manage their weight, overcome fears and anxieties or cure phobias. Hypnotherapy is also proven to be very effective for folks who want to be more confident, overcome or let go of undesirable habits or patterns. Find out what other issues hypnotherapy can help you with. Hypnotherapy works by uncovering the reasons for your struggle trapped in your subconscious. Using hypnotherapy techniques, we facilitate a process of healing to positively change your life. Unlike modern medicine, hypnotherapy seeks to uncover the source of your problem to reveal the cause and to help you heal – without drugs, without sedatives and without dulling the senses.
You may even want to begin using our Self-Help Hypnosis CD’s such as “healing cocoon” for cancer or other selections in the comfort of your home and get acclimated with the process. This way when you come in for your sessions, your subconscious mind is open and more receptive to the transformation.
“How can I describe my feelings in a sentence except to say: I am grateful to you Liza. You helped me overcome my internal fears of taking this exam which as you know, I had failed five times before. Now I can pursue my career in directions I could not foresee unless I passed this securities exam. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Timothy Krauss
Hypnosis is not mind control. I want you to know that the therapist cannot make a patient do what he/she does not want to do - medically or otherwise. Hypnosis is an internal process – not an external force. The hypnotherapist does not exude any power over the client. Anybody can learn to hypnotize, but to be a hypnotherapist takes years. That is the difference between an entertainer and a professional hypnotherapist. That is the difference between a weekend certification and years of experience and seeing thousands of clients over the years. There are no guarantees for success in therapy, not in cognitive therapy nor in hypnotherapy. Results depend on many variables, but most importantly on the client’s motivation to change.
Hypnotherapy has been approved by the AMA, the American Psychological Assoc., John Hopkins Hospital, The British Medical Assoc., and every major religion on the planet.
In recent times hypnosis and hypnotherapy have regained some degree of popularity and trust in the medical world. Hypnotherapists view the trance state as a condition in which the mind and body can be calm and serene. While in this state, alterations can be made which are not possible when the client is still completely conscious. When in a trance the person can still function fully and also carry out tasks, converse sensibly and carry out requests. Both physical and mental changes can be affected, such as reducing pain, healing disorders and encouraging relaxation. The subconscious never sleeps, never ceases to operate, but keeps us going in our voluntary and involuntary actions. Once the subconscious mind accepts an idea, it begins to make the idea a reality. It works the same for good or bad ideas. When applied in a negative way, the subconscious can be the cause of failure, frustration, unhappiness, and even illness.
“Your subconscious mind is like the soil which accepts any kind of seed – good or bad. It is the seat of your emotions and the storehouse of your memory.” To properly prepare a person for hypnosis, I educate my clients regarding some misconceptions; we discuss what is involved and I answer any questions. This is necessary because I believe there are only three things that can prevent a person from being hypnotized: (1) lack of knowledge, (2) fear, (3) resistance. If a person can think, reason, and communicate, that person can be hypnotized. By discussing the misconceptions and answering the client’s questions, hopefully any fear of hypnosis can be eliminated. The only other thing that keeps a person from being hypnotized is resistance which you the client controls.
To understand this form of relaxation best, I ask my clients if they recall dozing off during commercials while watching their favorite show. Most times the answer is a nod with a smile. We all have been there. And interestingly when the show is back on, they are wide awake and continue to watch the show to the end. Simply put, this is what occurs during hypnosis or state of relaxation. Sort of doze off, yet aware. Some clients have said: how do I know “it” worked? Some do not feel as if they were hypnotized yet feel so relaxed as if they took a nap. Some even feel no change has occurred, yet by their second session, they are amazed how “it” worked. Well, let me tell you a secret. There is no “it.” “It” is YOU.
